Long before our town was known as Dangriga or Stann Creek, the fertile North Stann Creek Valley was a bustling trade highway for the ancient Maya. From roughly 300 to 900 CE, inland Maya centers used the river to transport valuable resources like granite, cocoa, and slate down to the Caribbean coast, where coastal settlements specialized in maritime trade and salt production.

The incredible wealth of this era was brought to light just inland from Dangriga in the Stann Creek Valley, where archaeologists discovered the famous Pomona Jade Ear Flare; a priceless artifact dating back to 300 CE that features some of the earliest Maya hieroglyphics ever found in Belize.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the jagged coastlines and southern cayes near Dangriga became safe havens for British pirates (buccaneers). As piracy faded, these settlers turned to the lucrative mahogany and logwood timber trade. They built commercial trading stalls and waterfront storehouses at the mouth of the river, calling the settlement "Stann Creek" (derived from the old English word stanns, meaning storehouses).

To harvest the massive timber in the dense jungles, British loggers brought enslaved West Africans to the region. Over generations, the blending of African heritages, indigenous encounters, and British influences birthed the distinct Belizean Kriol (Creole) culture and language, establishing Stann Creek as a vital, permanent maritime outpost.

The definitive turning point in Dangriga’s history occurred on November 19, 1832, when a massive fleet of doreys (traditional dugout canoes) arrived on our shores. Led by Alejo Beni, these refugees were the Garinagu (Garifuna) people—descendants of shipwrecked African captives and indigenous Carib Indians who were fleeing political turmoil in Central America.

The Garifuna brought an incredible spirit of resilience, master fishing techniques, and robust agriculture to the area, introducing the widespread cultivation of cassava. The town grew rapidly, officially receiving its town status on February 15, 1895.

In 1975, amid a powerful national wave of cultural pride, the town officially dropped its colonial name of Stann Creek Town and reclaimed its native Garifuna name: Dangriga, which means "standing waters" or "sweet water," honoring the river that meets the sea.

Dangriga earned its official title as the nation's culture capital by becoming the ultimate sanctuary for artistic expression, political activism, and musical innovation in Belize.

• The Birthplace of Punta Rock: In the early 1980s, local legendary artist Pen Cayetano revolutionized the Belizean music scene right here in Dangriga. By blending traditional Garifuna acoustic drums with electric guitars, he invented Punta Rock—a genre that put Belizean music on the global map.
• Garifuna Settlement Day: Spearheaded by civil rights visionary Thomas Vincent Ramos, November 19th was established as a national public holiday. Every November, Dangriga hosts the country's most spectacular week-long festival, featuring dawn re-enactments of the 1832 canoe arrival, vibrant street parades, and non-stop traditional drumming.
• UNESCO Recognition: Because of the traditions kept alive on our shores, UNESCO officially declared the Garifuna language, music, and dance a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
